I have a step file model of a dental implant model, where the cylinder in the middle is basically an implant surrounded by the cortical and cancellous bone. I need to study the stress and strain energy density of the contact interface on the bone part.

After meshing,I am facing a problem that i have no idea how to select the elements on the inner wall of the cylinder and define them as a group. Because i need to know their IDs and extract the stress and strain data from f06 file. Is there a way in Patran that i can group the solid elements based on the surface or something?

Here is the step file:

Thank you very much!

If you want to recover the stress from the surface of the cylinder, you can mesh the surface with very very thin shell with same elastic modulus of cylinder (in a separate group) (utility skin solid elements) and merge the grid points. then you can plot the stress on the shell. This will not introduce additional stiffness as very thin.

Or, if you want to group the solid elements on the surface but do not want the shells, once made the group of the shell, in another group, just put all the elements attached to shell grid points (there is an utility, to do this. auto plot erase fem if i well remember) then you can delete the shells, just used to group the external grid points.

thank you very much.

i found an utility that i can select the surface solid elements.
