Hi there

We have a structure where a composite metal deck is to be used as a diaphragm to accommodate design lateral loads. However, prior to placing concrete, the metal deck alone will be used as the diagphram to accommodate construction lateral loads. Unfortuneately, we can't find any shear/fastener resistance load tables for the composite metal deck profile we are using WITHOUT the concrete. For reference, the metal deck profile is 3" deck, 3ft wide, 12" flute spacing.

Can anyone suggest something.
Many thanks
Warren

You may have to look into the SDI Diaphragm manual and do direct calculations to determine the shear capacity.

Or, you could perhaps call the deck manufacturer to see if they have any unpublished data.

You may want to try HILTI PROFIS Diaphragm for calculating the diaphragm capacity of a bare metal deck with puddle welds or pins.

I csan't believe that the manufacturer would not have had to deal with questions like this in the past. Call them.

WarrenS,

What kind of construction lateral loads are you considering? At least in my area, I have never heard of anyone designing a diaphragm for lateral loads during the construction phase.

There are concrete walls that are tilted, some up to 23 degrees. The completed concrete walls are currently shored to keep them from falling over, but the shoring posts need to be removed to complete the intermediate floors.
