What method(operation type) is the best for milling thread (in one pass)?

Take a look at the picture in the attachment.

What version of NX?

Do you need a machining answer or modelling?

What is the scale of the picture length and Outside Diameter are enough to describe it.

From a process point of view Lathe Thread Roller Thread grinder or even a milled 4th approach might be applicable. What is you're preference and why would you just thread cut it using lathe?

Hello hudson888.

- NX6
- machining
- lenght 12mm diameter 4mm
- it's impossible to use lathe becase of material - Zirconium oxide It is very fragile before baking, so I use XZC mill and made profile with method "VARIABLE CONTOURE" with SURFACE AREA as drive options. The same method I tried to use for thread but with no result.

Bailar,

For these situations we drive the tool using a modeled helix curve. I'm not at work so I'll post a prt file on Monday.

With a 4th Axis on the machine that's more of less what we used too.

Bailar,

You may be able to us a thread milling operation. See the atteched part.
There is a thread mill operation as well as a fixed contour using a helix as the drive curve.

You did not say what the pitch of the thread is.
Thread milling is not your "standard" operation. It is actualy a UG Open routine and is quirkey. However it does work once you have all the parameters defined correctly. It uses the feature information from the Symbolic Thread feature.

Bailar,

John posted the same type of examples I was going to post.
