Micro and subsurface crack inititation using XFEM

Hello all,

I am looking into using XFEM to assess fracture risk and crack initiation between two components in contact. Does anyone have anyone experience using this technique at the micro scale and subsurface levels? I am not even sure if that is possible?

Is there any good reference I can be pointed towards?

I used to perform VCCT by hand in Abaqus before XFEM with good results. The smallest I had applied it was for interlaminar cracking of composite plies. I hope this helps.
