Hello. If you look at the design values in the manufacturer’s catalog (TJ-9000) for microllam lvl, it has allowable stress for compression parallel to grain values but they are listed as beam orientation and there are no values for column orientation. Does this mean you’re not allowed to use microllam lvl as a column or that they simply test them only in a beam orientation? What do you think?

I don't see why they can't be used as posts. I know I've seen them used as studs. See Table 1 of ICC ESR-1387 for axial design values.

I'd suggest contacting your local Weyerhaeuser rep.

It's an engineered wood product, and was designed to be used as a beam. The proportions make it difficult to use as a column, but I suppose it should be possible. I'd look into durability issues with bearing on the ends. Those compression values are probably intended to be used when designing them as collectors in diaphragm assemblies. I have heard of people using them as studs before, you're probably okay with an appropriate fastener pattern. You'll likely need EWP plates, too, though, if it's within a wall.

Keep availability in mind. In my area, nobody stocks less than 11-7/8" wide LVLs. Smaller ones are special order items. So unless the contractor is on top of things and has other items to order (like trusses), they'll probably wait until the last minute and have to rip the larger stock down.

They should be able to be used as a post, but at a reduced compressive stress. Flexure only stresses the outer fibre to maximum stress, as a post the entire cross-section is stressed to maximum; this is a far worse condition. You might check with the LVL/PSL suppliers.

Rather than think climate change and the corona virus as science, think of it as the wrath of God. Feel any better?
