Hi,

What boundary conditions and loads ( how to apply the load) do I have to apply in order to validate my model and calculate the in-plane elastic properties?
The model is composed of a unit cell, meshed with Shell elements, with uniform thickness.

I want to compare them with the theoretical ones from Gibson and Ashby.

Thanks a lot!

?

one way of validating your model, after you've done all the QC checks, is to model a solution that you've done a hand calc for.

it sounds like you've done a hand calc ... "Gibson and Ashby". So, what boundary conditions did this use ?

are you going to reply to our questions (on your other thread) ?

Yes, I have done some calculations by hand but I am not sure how to load the unit cell in order to get the in-plane properties.

The ones I applied are to restrain the bottom nodes in x,y,z displacement(UX,UY,UZ) then loaded the cell with a displacement on the top nodes in the direction I want to calc the modulus.

Do you have any experience with fea?

I have a tonne of experience with FEA, but little that would help here.

Have any suggestions on how to approach the problem in general?

I haven't seen the failure so I can't comment intelligently.

My own 2c ... figure out a better way to solve the problem, rather than sharpening the biggest pencil around (ie FEA). I'm sure something unusual is happening locally to the failure (rather than analyzing a honeycomb cell).
