Hi all,

I am trying to model various HSS beam to HSS col welded moment connections with shell or solid elements(reinforced with thru plate or external collar). Does anyone have any experience doing this type of modeling using SAP2000? I have SAP2000 but do not have any FEA solver package (ABAQUS, ANSYS, etc). Is this task possible to w/o buying a general-purpose FEA package?

I tried searching for this in SAP2000 manual but couldn't find anything helpful.

Thanks in advance.

I think its possible with hand calculations. most HSS limit states can be used per AISC.

Hi,

If you want to do a fem model for design purposes, it is possible to do it on Sap2000 using shells for the plates (taking account a lots of simplification to save some time too) and doing a and a nonlinear analysis probably, its not easy but can be done.

Normally i always try do a connection design manually (using limit states of chapter J to K of the AISC 360), but if the connection geometry is to much complicated i do the fem model but on IDEA StatiCa software instead Sap2000. This is software is specific to do connection design using FEM.

Best Regards,
