Multi – Wythe retaining wall help

I am looking for a program to help design a Multi – Wythe retaining wall, anchored veneer brick too CMU block.

Just design the block wall as retaining and anchor the veneer to it as normal. Remember to waterproof the earth face of the block to avoid unsightly staining of the brick.

Why do you need a program to design a retaining wall? You must know how to do it yourself before using a black box.

Yes I do. But clients love are little toys to help them see, the big pitcher…

hokie hit the nail on the head.

The face brick veneer is not a structural element for your situation. Because of this the retaining wall (concrete or concrete block) would be designed without a veneer and the veneer added using ties that were installed when the structural wall was constructed. The back of the retaining wall MUST be waterproofed!

Make sure that you add "weeps" (open head joints at the lower part of the wall) to the veneer portion to prevent a moisture build up in the cavity.

Because of the usual grade elevation changes for most retaining walls, concrete masonry is preferable since joint reinforcement ("eye and pintel" or tabs) with a connecting mean for the veneer can be used and the brick may be laid later and the cavity can be drained without a moisture build up that can cause stains or efflorescence. - Not much different than a typical brick/block veneer of a building. There are many different options of joint reinforcement, which is commonly used as needed (every 8", 16" or 24") in every few courses of block.

One of the various programs suggested can be used to give the "gimmicky" presentation to build confidence.

Hi,STAADicEquilibrium

Ok there is a misunderstanding, I am not just building one retaining wall, and one retaining wall is over the water main going to the house. This project is for a 1910 home. On three sides of the property there will be a retaining wall, and a new driveway, sidewalks, carport and two decks one on the ground floor and one on the second floor, and lots more on this project this is just one project.

I am looking for a program that I can import my Revit model too, and test it and make changes to the model and send it back. What I like about Risa, is that you can build the model edit make changes and sent it back too Revit…

While it is easier to just assume the CMU is doing all of the work, it is absolutely acceptable to include the brick for out-of-plane forces, pending that they are actually composite. TEK has load tables and design charts for typical situations.
