Need help illuminating an underwater object using overhead lighting.

I need to find out how to illuminate underwater objects (approx 6' underwater) using only overhead lighting such as spots or floods. Due to the constraints of the location, the lights must be at least 15' above the surface of the water. I am concerned that floods will produce too much glare and I cannot seem to find much information on what size of light would be needed. Any help in pointing me to a useful source would be appreciated. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life gives you grenades, well....

The index of refraction change between air and water makes it extremely impractical to illuminate from the outside. The amount of reflected light would wash out your ability to see through the water from the top.

I agree. Due to the nature of this particular beast I cannot install permanent underwater lighting. I have told the folks that requested this that there was no good way I could find to do this due to the reflection/refraction issues. I also cannot place any lighting directly overhead. Does anyone know of a manufacturer of portable underwater lighting? When life gives you lemons, make lemonade. When life gives you grenades, well....

This may be way off base since I do not understand your constraints, but fiber optic lighting is a solution to consider for some underwater applications. The lighting source is remote and the only thing that comes in contact with the water is the light tube. You can just stick in right into the water. You can also get fittings for the fiber optic cable to direct the lighting.

Try Hydrel for underwater lighting. It is used a lot in las Vegas for underwater lighting of fountain and pools.
