I am coming to electroplating from the material science side and trying to learn the practical.

I have Ammen's Electroplater's Handbook and several years of Metal Finishing. Anything anyone else cares to recommned would be appreciated.

I am looking for a copy of:

Trouble in Your Tank Handbook for Solvin 3ed
by Lawrence J Durney

It is our of print and Hanser Gardner didn't have anything else to recommend.

Thank you,
Tom Walz

Go to for lists of books (with mini-reviews by Ted Mooney), with links to amazon.com. Modern Electroplating (4th edn.), Electroplating Engineering(4th edn.), and ASM Handbook Vol. 5 Surface Engineering are all tops but pricey.

Those in the business can get a free subscription to Products Finishing, which includes an annual Directory and Technology Guide similar to the MF Guidebook. In any event, you can use the online site.

Probably, you are already familiar with Metal Finishing's online sites, e.g.,

Electroplating, Anodizing & Metal Treatment Handbook is inexpensive ($13.46 + $3 airmail), rather like an oversized Metal Finishing Guidebook, from
The Canning Handbook Surface Finishing Technology is out of print, but can often be found used. Look for the final, 24th edn. at or
MIL and Federal standards are free downloads at
Finally, for standard methods of surface preparation, electroplating (& other coating methods) and testing of coatings, I recommend ASTM's Volume 02.05 Metallic and Inorganic Coatings,....

Thank you

Anything you would recommend over the others?

Tom

I think you can obtain copies of Durney's book from AESF using the following link:

Another source of reference books (including out-of-print) that is frequently recommended by Art Kushner (Plating Clinic columnist & expert for Products Finishing magazine/website) is Metal Finishing Publications. Their phone number is 914.333.2578.

Thank you for the help.

I have ordered it from AESF.

Actually this all got started because of Kushner's column. He recommended the book and Hanser Gardner and so on. I have a gret deal of respect for him and I figured if he reommended it it was worth going to to some trouble to find.

Maybe the best book to start with is 'Electroplating Course Manual -- Basic Practical Electroplating', highly recommended by Ted Mooney; info at I cannot vouch for its current availability, but it is much less expensive than course materials at the AESF website.

Electroplating Engineering(4th edn.) is the best book for building or remodelling a plant.

Glenn Mallory's book Electroless Plating is the best on that subject.

There is a list of 1000+ Electrochemistry books published since 1950 at
A number of plating, corosion, metallizing plastics, etc. books sponsored by The Electrochemical Society (helps to be a member) are listed at
For a scientific understanding of plating, the best book is Fundamentals of Electrochemical Deposition, by M. Paunovic and M. Schlesinger (1998); 301 pages, ISBN O-471-16820-3.

ASM Int. has some sale-priced books (same prices for non-members on these) at For example,
The Surface Treatment and Finishing of Aluminum and Its Alloys, 5th Edition (2 volumes) $199.

Volumetric Analysis of Metal Finishing Solutions $25.

Handbook of Effluent Treatment and Recycling for the Metal Finishing Industry, 2nd Edition, $49.
