hi there.

how do i reduce a network as to eliminate all unwanted components(such as lines connected to other substations, transformers etc) and replace them with equivalent parameters so as to still include the effects of these unwanted components? how do i perform this network reduction?

please assist.

It depends on the type of analysis you are performing.

If you are interested in fault analysis, you can do a lot of simplification of a network simply by combining impedances (just using simple series or parallel reduction).

If you are interested in power flow then network reduction involves introducing approximations.
You can eliminate devices upstream of the area of interest by assuming a fixed voltage source.
You can eliminate devices downstream of the area of interest (or on radial spurs) by assuming a lumped load with appropriate parameters.
You can't do much to reduce a true meshed network for power flow analysis.

Most power systems analysis books have a section on Y Matrix solution methods which describe 'node elimination'.

Try a classic like "Elements of Power System Analysis" by W.D. Stevenson for example.
