Dear smart people:

So I have acquired an intense interest in learning how to model structures and capture nonlinearities. Interesting primarily in building type analysis. For purposes really of understanding the post-yield behavior of buildings with say mixed lateral systems, or non-conventional lateral systems.

Where does one start? Books videos? Classes are not an option for myself because I have a family and need to be home during my evenings.

Any advice is great! Thanks!

Hi
may I ask a first question ...what did you study ?
What are you working now ? engineering office ?

Your question is very general...probably difficult to give an answer

One good pint to start is as always ... GOOGLE :)

best regards
Klaus

I would start here (Link) and then work through the list of references at the end if you want to get more in depth.

Klaus: I studied general civil engineering. but have been a practising struct engineer for 10 years.

there are two types of nonlinearity ... material NL (yielding and plastic behaviour) and geometrical NL (large displacement).

you might try MIT opencourseware, or, godforbid, youtube !?

another day in paradise, or is paradise one day closer ?

I would start by looking up information and studies on Static Push Over analysis. Good place to start for concepts of post yield behavior, ductility and such.

In addition to the sources given in the other replies, I'd suggest just playing around with simple structures in whatever FEA program(s) you have available, and working through any tutorials and/or sample analyses they provide.

That NEHRP document is great! Thanks for the tip. In practise we so often make judgment calls based on intuition and simple hand calculation. It is only recently I wish to get into the nitty gritty and get deep into the technicalities. Any tips on how to get started will be welcome.
