NX 8.5 CAE (NASTRAN) - Shell Element Thickness in Post Processor?

Is it possible to display the thickness of shell elements when post processing CAE results?

I am able to visualize the thickness of the mesh in FEM and Simulation:

* Right-click on collector->Edit Display->Element Thickness and Offset​

* Preferences->Mesh Display->Element Thickness and Offset​

In post processing I can change the result display, but the different results are all displayed on the shell elements:

* Right-click Post View->Set Result...->Location: Shell->Top, Mid, Average/Middle, Top and Bottom etc...​

I have tried to change the output request of the solution to include shell thickness. But I can't seem to find any output afterwards...

* Right click solution->Edit->Case Control->Output Requests->Edit->Shell Thickness->Enable SHELLTHK Request->PLOT/PRINT (Entity All/None)​

Can someone help me?

What is the objective to display Thickness in postview? So that you can view different results (Top, bottom,etc) at the "3D" model (after 2D shell become 3D display)?

Hi Tuw,

I would for example like to investigate how the distance between two components (with a large difference in thickness and thermal properties) varies when the temperature changes. When comparing the distance between mid-surfaces I will not take the change in thickness into account. It would be easier to measure the distance between the top face of the first component and the bottom face of the other component.

It would also be a good feature for pure visual purposes, especially when working with models with varying or changing thicknesses.

Hi A,

Not sure if this is what you want.. You can combine the 2 contour plots together, for example above is a displacement contour plot + thickness contour plot.. To do so:
1. After you obtain the results, go to Format... > Layer Visible in View...
2. In the dialog box, click on Reset to Global. By doing so, you are adding all your fem and sim displayable entities into your view, such as polygon body, mesh, loading and boundary cond, and in this case, the thickness plot...you will subsequently need to manage the show and hide of each of the entities yourselves using the simulation navigator as usual.
