Since Nx6 we can use four different backgrounds. In pre nx6 my background was a graduated blue background. After using the OOTB NX6 background options I want to switch to the pre NX6 background was the part default on opening the part - what must I do?

You can create a "visualisation template" which you pick the part with the correct background as a reference, then when you drag in this template it will apply the background, this way you can update previously created files, if this description is a bit vague, try searching the forum, as i asked the same question about 2 years ago, and John Baker explained to me how to do this.
The other way to do it is to create a template part file, add it into the templates in UGII, also add the call line into the .pax file, then you can select it from the "file new" list of files

-the option of the visualation template I knew, - in pre Nx6 file the default was saved with the part and overwritten using the new background function controlled from the customers default. For me its ok - but for some long time users its a problem... -

I guess you might have to edit the templates and/or default "null" part files for translations in order to have your preferred background asserted in all cases, because the backgrounds are part specific.

There is a new location for the edit background tool in NX-6 under preferences background, but depending on your customer defaults setting in can be quite manual.

So one thing the you'll probably need to do is to get into your customer defaults and edit the default graduated colours to your preferences, if you don't like the greys. Under Gateway>Visualisation and the Background colour tab.

Doing that doesn't address the four pull down colours so it seems. I'm not even sure if there is way to change then from those shades of grey.

I think this has been mentioned before. For the most part I think what NX does is okay, but I guess it would be useful to have the background settings as user defined rather than part specific in future versions. If only because I've had experience working with people who must be colour blind or something because they opt for non contrasting schemes that can be very difficult to work with. If you feel you really have to change colours or backgrounds to work with their files then wouldn't it be nicer if you'd the ability to do so by default.

The background settings are saved in the part file. For new models I was able to set a certain background editing the model-plain-1-mm-template.prt file
