Hello,

I'm trying to integrate NX6 with our manufacturing department here. I'm having trouble finding documentation relating to punching out sheet metal parts.

Does anyone here use NX6 to generate code for punched out sheet metal parts?

Is it possible to develop an NX6 post processor for this process?

Thanks,

Frank

So does anybody use NX6 CAD data to punch out sheet metal parts at all?

Sorry fmr110 I must be the only one who ever attempted something even vaguely similar. And it was so long ago that I have all but forgotten how it was achieved. Basically using GRIP and drilling programs I merely mapped different drills to punch styled and processed the text output of CLS to punch code. Yes I said CLS, this was hardly NX-6 more like UGII version 6. Maybe this is what is known as lost in the mists of time, but I can only suggest that it would still work in a similar vein if you choose to create some similar customisations.

Actually I would have hoped NX machining by now has punching modules but somebody other than myself would be required to comment on the product availability as I haven't dealt with that area in some time.

Best Regards

Thanks for the response Hudson.

I can't imagine that everyone manually codes their sheet metal punch press now... Do they? :)

No, I suspect that a lot of people are now 'punching' their sheetmetal with something other than an actual 'punchpress'. What I mean is that many are probably using laser or waterjet cutters. In that case, you program it like a mill following a pocket.

Thanks John.

Thats exactly what I was looking for. Does Siemens have any documentation about how to code a post processor in this situation?

Thanks,

Frank

Not sure (being that I'm not a 'CAM guy') but check to see if there is anything on programming a 'Wire-Cutting' machine. I would suspect that many of the same issues would exist for 'wire-cutting' as there would be for water-jet or laser cutting.

I don't suppose anyone out there has done a completely custom POST for punching sheet metal?
