I am trying to find out a weight to a complete assembly.
Do I need to change the material type in each individual part?
And if so how and where can I do this.
If I made such changes to the individual part, can I then see total weight in the assy?

It depends on what constitutes yor assembly and how dilligent others have been when they created the parts. When ever you create a part it will automatically be given a defaul density for example our parts are mainly steel, so out default density it 7.85kg/100mm2, however we make sure that we assign the correct material to each part as we model it depending on the type or grade of steel. We use our own custom library for this, however there is an in built library which will will contain an number of generic materials, you can also change the density (edit feature solid density) If all the parts have been created using the default desnsity setting, then you will have to go to each part and change the density if they are made from materials that are not the same density as the default setting. You will also have to deal with proprietary assemblies that consist of parts made from different materials. e.g. An engine model may consist of cast steel, rubber, aluminium and you may have to take the oil into account. You can use for the weight of a part like this by asking the supplier to provide you with a spec sheet which contains the information then using Analysis - Advanced Mass Properties - Advanced Weight Management and asserting a value to your part. This will show up in your assembly naviagtor with a different symbol in the Mass column which will highlight the assertion. Therse can also be removed at any time.

Hope this helps

Cheers
