Hi Everyone!

Can somebody point me where I can find the way how to calculate minimum thickness and height for the outer ring with an o-ring groove and the inner ring which is a filter plate please?

Design code: ASME VIII Div 1
Lodad: Internal Pressure, filter and water mass above filter plate

Please find screenshots below:

The inner filter supporting plate is a non-pressure part. The thickness can be calculated based on the the weight of the filter and the force of the fluid movement.

Hi mk3223,

Thank you for your comment. Can you elaborate why this is not a non pressure part? Internal pressure is acting on the filter plater from the bottom and the top. Is it the reason why the filter plate is treated as a non pressure part?

Any thought about outer ring?

Cheers,
Michal

the inner plate is a non-pressure part since the internal pressure on top and bottom of it were cancelled with each other. It's a non-pressure part welded on the pressure vessel internal wall.

I am not clear how the outer ring was attached to the vessel, so I don't have any comment about it.

Hi mk3223,

thank you again for your comment. The outer ring is welded with two fillet weld in the corners (bottom and top).I reckon, this joint should be calculated as follows:

a) top flange thickness in accordance with figure UG-34 (k) and eq UG-34 (c)(2)(2)
b) outer ring in accordance with Mandatory Appendix 2, figure 2-4 (3a) with a flange shape modification and 2.7 calculations of flange stresses should be replaced with calculation of swing bolt bracket stresses.

What do you think about that?

Cheers,
Michael

Hello Michael Kolbuc,

I agree the outer ring shall be calculated per ASME VIII-1 Appendix 2 as you state.

Regards,

Scott
