PDH for ND/TX PE

Hello,
I got licensed in the states of TX and ND mid this year thru comity. My original license is from the state of CO which does not have any CE requirements. I am up for renewal and I need 15 hours for this year. I was unable to acquire these thru conference activities etc. due to how late I got licensed in the year. I noticed that websites like PDHDirect.com provide course to acquire the required hours before the year ends. Are these valid? The PE board rules are pretty vague as far as what will not be allowed. Anyone here use a website like this one? Any other ideas/recommendations?

I've never been audited, so take that as you may. But for my TX PE, I did use PDHdirect a few years ago. The "lecture" was not really a lecture. They basically gave you a power point, expected you to read through it, and answer questions for a 10 question(or so) joke test at the end. The hour, took me 20 minutes. Some of the handouts were useful and I kept them. But as far actual education goes, I think theyre pretty low.

I would double check with the boards directly, but often a state waives the continuing education requirement for your first renewal. I think the idea is that if you register half way through the renewal period, it would be unreasonable to require all the hours in a shorter time period. If it was me, I would email the board directly and ask the question.

I did. They do require the 15 credits for the year. The biennial renewal requires 30. Since this is considered mid-way, I need 15.

Check with any organizations you're a member of (NCSEA, NSPE, AISC, etc.) many have on-demand webinars that will get you some or even all of your 15 hours for free.

Check the ASCE website. They have some webinars and stuff. I also see a Forensic Engineering Congress in late November in Austin. Personally, I much prefer a live presentation. I get junk mail from several different on-line providers, but don't recall who. Stuff in my field tends to be lacking.

Texas requires 1 hour of ethics, but in the past, they had ethics webinars available online to fulfill it. Texas also allows self-study, and watching video of past board meetings will qualify under that as well. Make sure it'll qualify for both states before using it. NM also requires ethics hours and has classes in several places around the state for that, if you happen to be anywhere close to them.

Definitely double check with the board.

Florida is the only state I'm registered in that requires CEU. I don't have to report them for the renewal, but if I get randomly audited I have to show proof of my credits. Florida's rules specifically state that of the 18 hours of credits required each bi-annum, 1 has to be on FL laws and regulations from an approved trainer, 1 on ethics from an approved trainer, and 4 on technical topics related to your license -- from an approved vendor. The remaining 12 can be on any relative engineering topic from any source.

The FL board website lists approved vendors. PDHOnline is one that I use.

Having been audited by the Texas Board, do keep a log of your CEU's, many of which can involve reading of technical literature.

You are likely going to have to pay for the ethics course and the laws and regulations course. For tracking, I still keep my personal excel log, but if you have a NCEES record, they have a pretty nice way of tracking and storing your certificates.
