Dear Structral engineering experts,

I would like help with the following

I have my builder made a mistake by constructing roof of my porch which is supported with having pillars at three corners but one side by wall. ( Actually I was out of country when he did it). I would have liked to have the porch supportd by four columns /pillars instead of wall on one side. The question would be what are the options I have If I need to demolish the wall and make pillars instead. Is it possible to have pillars after the roof is laid. The size of porch is 20 x 18 feet.

You will need to have a local structural engineer look at this to give appropriate advice. We cannot do so in a forum.

Ron is right - but if you are a structural - you should be able to answer your own question??

I agree with Ron. It should be noted, however, that a 20' x 18' roof supported only on four corner columns is unstable unless the columns are restrained against rotation at the top, bottom or both. If you are talking about wood construction, that is unlikely to be the case and is not easily achieved.
