Pipe Penetration Through Concrete Slab 3

Working on a project where we are pulling our altitude valve and bypass line out of an underground pit at one of our elevated storage tank sites. We are relocating into an above ground building for better access. Building will be situated on a slab on grade. We will have a pipe penetration through the slab. Any suggestions on how to isolate the pipe from the slab? I was thinking of maybe wrapping the ductile iron pipe with some sort of asphalt expansion joint material. I'm thinking if we just pour concrete right up against the pipe penetrating the slab, it will crack relatively soon after construction. That's how it was done years ago for our pipe penetrations in our water treatment plant, but it looks sloppy. We will be using adjustable pipe supports so I am not worried about differential settlement between the building and the pipes. Any ideas or thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Yes, some form of bond breaker is all you need. We would typically specify 1/2" flexcell (asphalt impregnated fibre board). But I have seen other options used. You could, to make it a bit cleaner, have them caulk the top of the flexcell to the pipe. But once the slab moves, this may look like a dogs breakfast anyway.

There are many pipe penetration seals. They usually need an annulus so a larger pipe in the slab and then seals.

People like Link seal - are very good.

You need to talk to the vendors and understand what your materials are, water head to resist and potential movement to choose the correct seal. Ductile Iron is still fairly brittle and doesn't like shear forces.

Simple rubber seals like this might be all you need.
