My company has a need for occasional PMI verification of the materials of construction of large engineered fabrications - do any companies offer PMI testing as an on-site service?

There are many companies that use portable x-ray fluorescence or spectroscopic methods to do PMI. You can check the "Buyers' Guides" of NACE, ASM, or ASNT. If you are in an area with a large number of companies with similar needs, your telephone directory's Yellow Pages may be sufficient.

Before you start, however, make sure you understand the capabilities and the limitations of these techniques especially if you are interested in detecting elements with a low atomic number.

Good Luck!!

We use Cooperheat MQS when we have to get independant on site PMI.

Hi,

I work with PMI testing regularly. It depends on which elements are important for your application. X-ray systems for instance will not see C, but require very little preparation.

Modern optical emission spectrometers can easily pick up C, together with P and S if they are important.

Both techniques pick up a range of other elements. For specific detail e-mail me direct.

Cheers

With the declining initial cost of these machines and the simplified user interface, many companies are venturing into the PMI marketplace. The demand is also high for this type of service.

Selection of a company to perform this type of inspection is not so simple however. Most comapnies are using plain NDE inspectors who have little knowledge of chemistry or metallurgy. For instance I came across a company whose PMI operators couldn't tell me the difference between ss304 & ss321. Select a company with engineering or lab capabilities as well since then you can be assured that their procedures should be docummented and lab proven.
