These systems are often in sawmill systems where the log must be centered on a chain but since the log is not smooth the knots and other deformities causes huge pressure spikes unless there is a small air cylinder to absorb the shock. Do a search of air over oil. You can see this technology is used for vehicle shock absorbers.
Can you explain it more specifically, please ? I have searched this topic for long. But there aren't many forum that discuss this topic. Where can i find references so that i can understand about this kind of system ? Thank you for your answer.

I am not sure that I have understood your question correctly, but air over oil systems are used in low pressure systems where the compressibility of air in the cylinders is not acceptable.
