Is there any standard referred to design high & medium pressure oil filters?
If not, how are they designed then ?

There are various standards on element performance, efficiency, collapse avoidance etc...

Filter arrangements and therefore the design processes are application specific.

Flow direction, pressure drop, pressure rating, service access, by-pass indication...they are all open to suggestion.
 
thanks for responding.. you have mentioned the design related points for filter elements, I am more looking for information for filter housings in particular...
 
That was the point I was making, there are no standards for the shape and profile etc.

The standards apply to the element, which is the functional part of the filter. The housing is just the package to contain the fluid under pressure. Yes, there are standards for the ports, SAE flanges and threads, BSP threads, metric threads etc, but there are so many ways of installing and connecting the filters, it would not be possible or practical to apply a standard.

Of course there are such things as the machinery directive, pressure equipment directive and CE marking that uphold a minimum quality and fitness for purpose etc...but there is nothing beyond that.

The technical data for good filters will tell you the max working pressure (Design Pressure), the high cycle fatigue data (number of cycles) and burst pressure or factor of safety.

They are all relevant and should be known before selecting the filter for the application.

I am aware of the application aspect, however, I am referring to the design aspect of filter head and filter bowl. The query is thus,
How should the filter bowl and the filter head be designed to ? Proof Pressure ,Fatigue Pressure, or Burst Pressure ?
 
You are asking about the design management process?

1) Identify the maximum working pressure
2) Identify the material and the material properties
3) Design the filter housing to suit the application
4) Optional FEA test if facility available
5) If not, jump to procurement of prototypes
6) Test to destruction
7) Repeat as necessary to ensure design requirements are met

Experience, knowledge based engineering, simulation and analysis will all help to mitigate the risk, but design validation is the only real way to prove the design and that involves testing.

1x10^6 pulses for high cycle fatigue..or SN curve

Burst test is a destructive test, or you can apply 4 or 5 times the working pressure to validate.
