Pressure Vessel Analysis Software Program 1

I'm an intern working for Texaco Exploration and Production Inc. This summer my job is to measure the thickness of 3- phase separators (oil, gas, water) located on each gas well, this is part of a safety inspection.

For the last few days I have been using an evaluation copy of the program Codecalc 6.3 created by Coade Engineering. Which is about $2500. The program is not too bad, but I would like to check some other out before I decide to buy this one. I heard about one program called Vesscalc and it's been around since early 1990's, but could't find much about it.

Can anybody tell me about any other programs out there, and how they compare to Codecalc if possible? Im basically trying to determine the corrosion rate, thickness of corroded wall, remaining life in years of vessel, among others.

You really don't need vessel software for most of the information you are trying to determine. The thickness of the vessel can be determined by a competent API-510 inspector using ultrasonic measurement. Longview and Cooperheat are some companies that offer these services. Once you establish the current thickness you can calculate the corrosion rate by:

(Original Thickness - Current Thickness)/ # of years

Using the corrosion allowance that is on the U-1A Form, you can then establish the # of years until the corrosion allowance is met (based upon the current corrosion rate). If the corrosion has already exceeded the original corrosion allowance, then you may need vessel software to determine if the corroded component in question is the limiting component for the MAWP.

My company uses Advanced Pressure Vessel (APV) it is ok but I am not real happy with the user interface. I like Compress ( much better.

There are several codes that are involved when you assess a vessel to determine if it is fit for service:

API-510 : Inspection of Pressure vessels

ASME Sec. VIII, Div. 1 : Usually the original design/construction code for the vessel

NBIC (Nat'l Board Inspection Code): Covers inspection, repairs, and alterations of vessels

API-579 : Fitness for Service of Vessels, Tanks, & Piping. Very useful if you run into problems (local corrosion, general corrosion, bulges, cracks, etc...)

Please call me if I can be of any assistance.

Microprotol is a good software for mechanical design of Pressure vessels , HEat exchangers , COulmns , and Sttel stacks which can handle ASME , BS, Din, AD and CODAP

This is one of the best expert system for pressure vessel design To of my knowledge codecal doent handle Jacketed vessels and vessels with boot , and Multiple openings and You cannot control the flnage design by maintaing the OLD BCD and you want a new flange t be designed .

Microprotol has many advantages over Code cal and even the supports are designed by the software ..
many more

thanks AP, I will check out Microprotol.
