Is there any way to lock, so to speak, specific drawing items / entities to prevent inadvertent changes? We have certain items on template drawings that I would like to be able to configure so that no changes could be made, either intentional or accidental. Any suggestions?

Ah, the question that has plagued and intrigued many AutoCAD users since the beginning of AutoDesk.

Please be more specific. Do you want to lock entities on layers, or just certain items on a certain layer? Do you want to lock items so other users cannot change them?

These are not impossible, though not entirely easy to accomplish. There are 3rd party software items available that enable you to encrypt entire drawings with passwords to make editing them extremely difficult without the password.

Rest easy,

Bird,
We'd like to lock specific entities on a layer. If necessary, I guess we could create a specific layer that included nothing but locked entities.

You give your self the answer.
put the not to modify in a layer and lock that layer.
If they want to , they will change it, but is a solution at least.

Hope it help.

I agree with pardal. There are other ways to accomplish what you describe, but layer management is easiest and clearest.
