Problems with layout dimensioning

Hi there, I am trying do dimension a part in the layout mode of AutoCAD 2000 and am getting problems. It is a 3d model that I am dimensioning and when I try to setup the drawing to give me my views it creates projections in model space. Its been a while since I've used ACAD, been using UG for a while so I'm a little lost.

Any help would be great,

Thanks

I'm not sure I'm following you so I'll just tell you what works for me. I make no claim that it's the most efficient way. In fact, it likely is not given my relative inexperience with ACAD.

I do my design in solids, working in model space. Once I'm happy with it, I switch to one of the layout tabs where my viewport is automatically created. I then switch to model space, staying in the layout tab. I copy my solid and orient (using 3DALIGN, 3DMIRROR, & 3DROTATE) the copies to create my desired views. I then use SOLPROF to create the PV and PH layers. I then go to the layer manager and freeze-in-current-viewport all layers but my border layer and the newly created PV layer. (Occasionally I will explode the PH object and delete the undesired hidden lines and then not freeze that layer but I'm not a big fan of hidden lines, generally.)

Once I've done that, I switch back to paper space and do all my dimensioning from there, making use of suitable dimension styles set up in my original template.

I am not sure that I understand the problem. Are you having problems w/ dimensioning the object or is the 3D drawing turning into a prjected drawing such as a 2D front view after dimensioning?
Remember dimensioning takes place in the X-Y plane so reorient your X-Y coordinate into the plane you want to dimension the object.

Sorry about that. Chicopee has it pretty much right, when I try to click the setup view button on the solids toolbar it creates projected lines (as in top, front, and right side) that are visible in model space. That is one problem. The other is that the dimensions don't show up in the layout mode. I have tried to change the colors/properties and have not gotten any further.

thanks for the help

Perhaps you're doing your dimensions on a layer which is frozen in the paperspace viewport.

Since you say it is creating "projections" of the views in model space, it sounds like SolDraw was performed. If this is the case then the dimensions you created in Model Space will not show up unless you double click in the viewport in paperspace and turn the "current VP freeze" button to show the layer the dimensions are on.

Hope this helps,
Marshall
