Hello,
A flat slab carrying some amount of fill is being designed. An opening is to take place and reinforced concrete parapets around the opening are in place to avoid for the fill to come.
When designing such a slab for punching and for the columns located at a distance less than 10 x slab thickness, should the opening be considered when checking punching or does the code mean by opening a free one?
Thank you

Normally I would think that the opening should be considered to limit the critical punching shear perimeter. Often the parapets will improve the shear situation but it's usually pretty hard determine how to quantify that in a way compatible with the code provisions for punching shear.

I like to debate structural engineering theory -- a lot. If I challenge you on something, know that I'm doing so because I respect your opinion enough to either change it or adopt it.

Noted kootk. So if a core is located near a column (less than 10xslab thickness) u will deduct the opening from column critical perimeter ?

I will indeed. There might be other, more liberal stories that can be told. That would require more specific details describing the situation however.
