Question about Imposed Load Tables in Codes

Can anyone tell me how they came about the values for the imposed loads in the codes (eg. ASCE 7, BS6399 etc.) ?
Where can i find reliable documentation for reading up on this?

Much of ASCE-7 is derived from ANSI A58.1. I have a 1972 copy. I'm not sure if it goes back any further than that.

if you're talking live loads, there is a commentary in ASCE 7, I'm not sure which year but I have a photocopy from ASCE 7 Table C4-2 in my notes that gives live load statistics for different occupancies.
