Good Morning All,
Is QW-407.2 applicable to base materials of the production welds too or is it just applicable to the Weld Metal and HAZ. If it is applicable to the base materials, where is it mentioned in ASME Sec IX?

Regards,
HMN

It isn't...you have to check the construction Code, such as UW-40 Sec. VIII Div. 1. "As a minimum, the soak band shall contain the weld, heat-affected zone, and a portion of base metal adjacent to the weld being heat treated".
407.2 is only applicable if impacts are necessary.

Thanks David339933 for your reply. Construction code is ASME B31.3 and impacts are applicable.
Now would QW-407.2 be applicable to BASE MATERIAL?

QW-407.2 is applicable to WPS qualification. It states the heat treatment of the PQR coupon must be at least 80% of the soak time that the production weld would see. A 1 inch weld would need a pqr heat treated at least 48mins (80% of 1hr/inch) to satisfy QW-407.2.

Production welds must fall within this limit. Usually you would limit the thickness on the WPS to the max allowed per QW-407.2.

HMN,

Are you asking whether or not the PQR requires impact testing of the base metal?

The devil is in the details; she also wears prada.
