Hello Friends,
I am not able to understand and calculate the minimum inside depth requirement between FH and Shell End cover. Could someone expert help me on this preferably with an example please ?
Thanks in advance.

Shanamo, RCB 5.1 is referring to the depth between the FH and tubesheet, not the shell cover. The intent is to provide sufficient depth that the flow is not restricted as it crosses from one tube pass to another. As far as I know there are no standards for clearance between the FH and shell cover.

Crossover area can be calculated by any convenient means.

Mike

The problem with sloppy work is that the supply FAR EXCEEDS the demand

Thank you Mike.
I agree but is there any rule of thumb or criteria for calculating the gap between FH and Tubesheet? Moreover, what judgement is required to provide the sufficient gap between FH outside and shell cover inside surface?

Thanks
Shanamo

Shanamo, clearance between FH and tubesheet may be governed by crossover area as discussed previously.

Clearance between FH and shell head is governed by practical matters, such as adequate clearance to accommodate differential expansion between bundle and shell, fabrication tolerances, presence of lift or pulling lugs and so forth. Usually you just set it, rather than calculate it.

I doubt I'd make it less than a couple of inches.

Mike

I have never looked for this corss flow area. As far as i know, we calculate the shell cover length based on our company's standards which takes into account the nozzle, the bolt being used in the rear floating head assembly etc. Once the length is determined, you can see for the clearance between FH and shell cover.

Thank you all for excellent elaborations.
