Radiant Heat across a distance 2

I have a radiant heater that will hang from the ceiling in a gym (angled at 45 degrees in towards the center). I would like to put a net, that i know the particular combustion temperature for, as close as possible to the radiant heat source (for space maximization purposes).

Is there an appropriate way to theoretically calculate the closest I can hang the net? I know the specifications of the radiant heat source as well.

I'd be more concerned that a ball would push the net into the radiant heater. I can't really imagine using a radiant heater in a gym, net or netless.

I'm assuming gas-fired radiant, not hydronic radiant?
 
Well I'm not very concerned about the ball pushing the net in, the net is very heavy and hangs ceiling to floor, the ball may dislocate the back of the net maybe 6" maximum if that.

Would it matter which? I know the Q(Btu/hr) and the emissivity of the material of the radiant heat source. As well as the delta T across the minimum distance to the net.
 
I think if you consult the heater manufucturer itself that would give you all information of installation, clearances from materials..etc
 
yeah, the manufacturer will give you clearances from combustibles from all directions, ie back, in front, height above floor (that could be statutory requirement)
 
and don't forget to ask the net manufucturer too
 
Instead of a net, I would intall something like chicken wire.
Yeah, a heat balance could be performed but it will be full of holes.
 
a heat balance will not save you when something catches on fire or melts. Manufacturers installation guide and any code requirements are king unless you are trying to satisfy your curiosity, then go for it mate!
