Hey Team,

I'm after a bit of advice regarding Cl2.2.3 (b)(ii). We have a shear wall where the vertical bars are tied together with legs at every 200mm spacing. My question is what value of β would you use? The code stipulates 'in regions where effective confining reinforcement is provided, β shall be evaluated by rational calculations taking account of the amount of confining steel and the details used, but shall no exceed two'

In summary I'm trying to obtain a value of β=0.75 but we obviously need to justify this and reference something. We can't make random numbers up :).

Thanks

Gareth

All good. Refer to AS3600-2018 commentary

For the sake of curiosity/discussion, what answer did you arrive at?

A cursory glance at the commentary for that clause seems pretty simple, β = 1 + (C*confining pressure)/0.9*f'c, where confining pressure can be calculated using the methods for columns in section 10.

Why yes, I do in fact have no idea what I'm talking about

@just some nerd. Yes, in summary, calculate the confining pressure and apply the formula. Quite an interesting read when you get into it. I would have thought ligs/legs @ 200 spacing would be fine, by the code directed to a minimum of 150mm.
