DON'T

Column Strength for that Tonnage and Length requires a 3.5-4" Rod diameter Rod.

ok?? a cylinder that holds 3 tons, that has a rod diametre of 4"?

The rod diameter needs to take into consideration mounting, orientation, speed of start and stop, shock loads, direction of load as well at operating load. In long stroke cylinders it is common to have a spacer between the head and piston to increase stiffness and life. The force required in both directions of travel is also important to know.

Most manufactures of custom hydraulic cylinders should be able to provide you with a suitable cylinder if you provide the above information.

6,000# is a completely different requirement. However for a 90" Stroke the rod has to be at least a 1 3/4" Dia. according to the Womack Machine Supply, Fluid Power Data Book. Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=WE&Category_Code=TA

On the other hand, if you could lift the load by using the cylinder on the retract stroke the rod would be in tension and tensile strength and piston attachment method would be the only consideration.

All cylinder manufacturers have information on Piston Rod sizing for Column Strenh, Bearing Loads and Stop Tube requirements in their catalogs and most cylinder salesman will work with you to make sure the cylinder application is sized correctly for your needs. Did that for years.

Get some help.

i know before any project will be underway i will have a hydraulic consultant certify the system, before and after the system is put in place.
