We need to do some CFD work to analyze one of our products; air flow over a heatsink, nothing too complicated. Could you please recommend any good CFD consultants/companies to approach, preferably in California or on the west coast. I already contacted a few, including ANSYS and Fluent, but I can not judge who to go with because I have no experience in CFD.

Thanks,

I have used Fluent for consultancy before and they seem to be somewhat lacking compared to the specific CFD consultancies. They seem to just use their technical support and development teams to undertake the work, although it can be useful if the model is really complicated and needs to be run on a daisy-chain of machines.

We use Ansys for our FEA in-house, but for consultancy they have always recommended independant firms. They are already the owners of CFX, but have also just bought-out Fluent, so I don't know what will happen there.

An indepednat specialist fluid dynamics consultancy might be best for what you are talking about. The only ones that I have used are Zeta Dynamics and Flosolve. Both have a very good service. I'm afriad they're both in the UK, but I have worked with Zeta from Australia before and they don't seem to have a problem with travelling at their own cost even for the smallest jobs/enquiries.

Hope this helps.

The link doesn't seem to be working. I believe that I have worked with idac before for some FEA training and consultancy. They seem to know their stuff.

We had a demo from CFDesign and considering that we are a ProE house, it seems to fit us well. But may be we should see others too. Thanks for all your replies.

Baheej -
I use CFDesign and would be glad to talk with you about your project. I also provide IR services which can be used to measure the heat sink temperatures and performance.

Feel free to contact me through my website.

When we first started this project we were interested in finding a consultant to do the analysis, which we did. At this stage we evolved into looking for an in-house solution and hence the shift in our focus. Thanks everybody for your responses.

For such a simple task use Icepak which has a macro so you can optimise the heat sink design for the thermal resistance you are trying to achieve.

The non conformal meshing of the heatsink asembly can be adjusted in any direction (the slack values) and elongated to capture the downwind hot air tail if you are in a blown air application.

Icepak is around 1450 pounds /pa to lease.
