Here's the WMO defintion of the quality of a site for thermometer.
Class 5 has an expected error band of 5 deg C, class 4 2 deg C
and here's the UK's thermometers used to generate the sort of headlines that the chicken little's enjoy repeating to 'prove' something or other
So the next time you see claims about a record breaking temperature at some locality in the UK, bear in mind that >70% of the time the poor siting of the thermometer could be causing a 2-5 deg C error.
