Reinforcing Detailing 1

I wanted to get some feedback on a mat foundation detailing observation. I have seen detailing of mat foundations with projections beyond the vertical walls having the top bars bent down along the outside edges in both directions. These bends along the outside act as a stirrup, closing the top and bottom reinforcing. Since I have commonly seen this detailing practice not performed, I would like to hear some of your comments pro or con.

The main reasons our group details mats this way are twofold:

The bend provides anchorage for developing the rebar for moments near the edge of the mat from wall (line) loads.

The laps in the bends allow the top and bottom bars to be tied together for constructability location and stability during pouring.

I hope our practices give you some help and insight into this practice.

Thank you for your help, that is the info I needed.

I understand of your reasons, both make this detailing practice very logical.

I was originally thinking along the lines that it was to resist the shear created in the projection when any uplift type force was being resisted by the soil wedge above.
