Hey,
I'm an old piping designer thrust into steel platforms & ladders. Not a lot of familiarity with grating panels. 2 ft. wide panels stacked across. Specs call for max. unsupported area of 4' x 9', max span 5'-6". In general, I'm assuming this is all fine, just seems odd to have a longitudinal support under every 2nd or 3rd panel. Can anyone shed a little light on me?

How about sharing a little information on the grating?

if your "accross" dimension is smaller than 5'-6" ; you only need an "accross" support (as opposed to longitudinal) every other panel.

Or am I misinterpreting your question? if so, please post a schematic drawing of your problem, as I see no need for a longitudinal support...

Can you break the 9' span in half, two 4.5' spans and use a 4" or 6" channel support to span the 4', and use two 2' wide sections and two span continuous over the channel. The mid support channel can be anchored into the sides and be removable or not.

Sorry, I think I'm just groping with something unnecessary here. The 4'x9' spec is supposed to apply to floor plate, not grating. I have long 2 ft. wide panels @ max span of 5'-6". kingnero, I think you see what I mean. As long as the cross supports are 5'-6" or less, then that should be adequate. As I see it the longitudinal supports are unnecessary with regards to the grating support, they only support a couple of bearing bars. They asked for the 4'x9' spec which is specifically for checker plate. Grrrr. I'll placate and continue on. Thanks everyone.

Sorry again for the confusion. See attached PDF. Support members on this platform are for checker plate floor per client spec at the request of the client. I had to do that. Problem is there is no checker floor plate but removable rectangular bar grating, also a requirement of the client. I know, it's blown my mind also. Being rather new to this, I assume the supports for the grating panels run transverse to the bearing bars. The 2' wide panels run vertically on the page. The one question that I have; is it necessary to have each panel supported on all sides of each panel for removable grating, or are the transverse supports sufficient? It is my opinion that the intermediate supports running vertically are unnecessary for grating support. They will only support the one panel that sits above them. (?!)

The difference is that grating panels are "one way" spans, plates can be "one way" or "two way" spans.
