Removal of Impurities from Molten Brass 1

I would like to know about the products/flux that can be used to remove impurites from molten brass. At my current facility the brass scrap is melt at 800 degree celsius but at times I get to know about presence of aluminium impurities through chemical spectro analysis of a small sample of molten brass. I would like to know the techniques/method/flux or any other products that can be used to remove the aluminium impurity from molten brass

If there is any slag or dross formed you have products from FOSECO. But if there is Aluminium contamination, it is not possible. You must sort out the scrap and segregate them. Before charging if you can conduct a random PMI test, it will help in separating Aluminium rich scrap that will have to be removed. Apart from these basic precautions, I am not aware. I leave it to other experts to comment.

Aluminum is soluble in brass melt mixtures, forming aluminum bronzes. You can't separate it after the fact as far as I'm aware- there's nothing that you can toss in to cause the aluminum to be selectively removed. Yes, it looks like you just have to keep the aluminum and aluminum bronze scrap out of the mixture before you melt.

To provide more info. I would like to let it be known that scrap is segregated manually before melting in the furnace but still some times some scrap containing aluminium gets sent away in the furnace by mistake so in order to nullify such mistake I want to use some sort of techniques/method/flux or any other products that can be used to remove the aluminium impurity from molten brass.

Nope, it doesn't exist. Same way you can't remove Ni. Since it soluble (up to reasonable levels) there is no selective reaction process to lower it.

Is there any way to remove Iron (Fe) content from molten brass???

Pieces of iron don't instantly dissolve in molten brass, but rather sink to the bottom of the melt and can be removed by filtration. Traces of iron in brass are a different matter and are sometimes desired.

 

Do you use an XRF alloy analyzer a.k.a. PMI gun? Ideal for sorting scrap.

To clarify regarding usage of any alloy anlayzer equipment like PMI gun, I would like to tell that manual labour is used for sorting of scrap. We rely on the sorting done by workers. We dont use any other equipment. But I would surely like to implement usage of PMI gun.

One other question I have is how can I remove lead content from molten brass, at present normally I make brass ingots having max. 3% lead content.
