For rough finished formed concrete surfaces, is their an accepted or specified standard on when the defect should be patched? All I could find in ACI 347 was patch the defects and tie holes. They address knocking down the fins greater than 1/2", but nothing on the size of defects that should be filled.

In lieu of any better info, would 1/2" be a good starting point? Fill anything greater than 1/2" diameter or 1/2" deep?

Really depends on what architect wants. ACI 301 gives some requirements based on the surface finish number that architect is in theory supposed to include in specifications, but would guess most don't. In ACI 301-10 it's in section 5.3.3.

You have to use caution... sometimes often repairs are more noticeable than the defects.

ACI 301-10 and 301-16 both contain a default requirement for as-cast finishes, SF-1.0 on surfaces not exposed to view and SF-2.0 on concrete surfaces exposed to view.

The SF designation was developed to replace the rough form and smooth form finish classification used in the past for precisely the reasons you ask - to make some more specific statement or qualification of the expected treatment.

If ACI 301 is incorporated in the project specifications and no further guidance is given, 301 should give sufficient direction in 5.3.3.5 in the current edition.

If the rough form finish was specified for the effect of the finish, it may well be more like an architectural finish and repair may absolutely be considered detrimental, as dik suggests.

Thanks to all for the replies.
