I am building a project at the moment that requires some parts of the circuit to be dropped in voltage. I have considered using resistors. However I know of their reputation of power consumption.

My question is, is there a more efficient alternative to resistors?
(plus I do not want to be spending $100 for a component)

"their reputation of power consumption" - very good!

Switchers have a much better reputation. Google "Simple Switcher". There are lots of other switching voltage regulators.

Half full - Half empty? I don't mind. It's what in it that counts.

$100 for a component??.. thats a big resistor
You might want to actually state input/output voltage and current levels so a suitable solution can be provided.

As Gunnar stated switchers are the way to go.

Switched capacitor if current is low. Switched inductor if not.
