We are designing a retaining wall on the riverbank for a proposed four-storey building.

Our main concern is how much surcharge will the building impose on our retaining wall? Retaining wall height is 3.5m.

Any leads on how to compute surcharges in general?

thanks.

May I suggest that you shoulld not try to design the retaining wall for the surcharge of a four storey building, it quite simple won't work. I would advise, on a 3.5m high wall, that the foundations to the building are taken to a bearing at the same level or below the retaining wall base and the wall designed to cope with the retained soil and any nominal traffic surcharge only. Perhaps if you explain the relationship between the two elements in more detail, we could offer more advice.

Simply put 'May I suggest...quite simply won't work' I agree 'more detail' required.
