Rigidity for split flange

Dear All,

As we know, we shall design the split flange for the moment which is double of the maximum of seating or operating moment. Shall we use the same moment i.e. double of maximum for rigidity calculations??? Or we can simply use max. of operating or seating.

abhimech1991, conservatism would say to use 200% Mo. Not really any clear guidance that I see, but my commercial software uses the 200% multiplier.

abhimech1991, I ran a flange in Codecalc prior to my 28 Jul 15 15:09 post to confirm. Is this what you mean?

codecalc using 200 % moments for rigidity but PVElite not even bothered about rigidity.
 
abhimech1991, I actually just about never use PVE. Seems odd. I will try to take a look at it later today.

abhimech1991, OK, had a few minutes, opened a PVE example file.

Go to the "Flange Dialogue" screen, by clicking "Perform Flange Calculation", set flange type to "Lap Joint", then the data boxes for # of splits and thickness based on rigidity will appear. The calculation does use 200% Mo.

I have AES type exchanger. Can u check flange calculations for floating head in PVElite. Does it takes 200% moment for floating head flange???

abhimech1991, I have tried opening a PVE example problem w/ immersed floating head. Alas, the file has some kind of error, won't run, no output.

Per TEMA 5.14 some backing rings are not subject to 200% factor, while some are. I am not able to tell what PVE is doing here, whether these TEMA rules are implemented or not.

These floating head backing rings are more generally designed per TEMA, rather than Sec VIII, Div 1.
