Rivet installation standard in aerospace / military world? 2

Hello,

Does anyone know of a general standard from SAE or ASME (etc) that describes the proper installation of rivets? I used to refer to MIL-STD-403, but that has been inactivated by the powers that be, so I can not reference it on drawings (although the data seems useful). Is there a superseding document for this?

Typically, the aircraft SRM is the best reference for fastener installation, since many of the aircraft manufacturers use their own hole tolerances, etc. I normally work primarily in the military world and a good general reference is T.O. 1-1A-8 "Structural Hardware". It includes rivets, Hi-Loks, bolts, screws, Heli-coils, etc.

T.O. 1-1A-8 is a good reference. The problem I'm running into, however, is that when I write a note on a drawing stating:

Install rivets IAW MIL-STD-403

or

Install rivets IAW T.O. 1-1A-8

I'm told that our customer has probelms with both (although an alternative is not suggested!). MIL-STD-403 is inactive for new design, and Global DRM prohibits the use of referencing T.O.'s.

Any more suggestions?

How about Mil-R-47196, and AC43.13-1B? Between the two I find I'm well covered. I can't confirm that Mil-R-47196 is still active because ASSIST isn't responding tonight.

It looks like Mil-R-47196 has been superseded by NASM 47196 and covers buck type rivets. For blind rivets, NASM 47195 seems appropriate. As for AC43.13-1B, I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the guidance.

I'm still open to any more suggestions ...
