I am designing a rocker bearing for a railway bridge project and am struggling to find helpful guidelines on the procedure to follow. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Some general design provisions for rocker bearings, and the equations for calculating the contact stresses based on the curvature of the surfaces can be found in the AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications (Section 14.7.1-1 thru .1-3 of the LRFD 9th Ed.)

Analyze the expected loads and forces acting on the rocker bearing, including vertical loads from the bridge structure, horizontal forces due to thermal expansion, and any dynamic loads from train movement. Consider both static and dynamic loading conditions. Choose the appropriate type of rocker bearing based on the design requirements and load conditions. Common types include plain sliding bearings, pot bearings, and elastomeric bearings. Consider factors such as load capacity, movement capability, durability, and maintenance requirements.

Thank you both. For calculating the sizing of these bearings are there commonly used sizes that are readily available or will they have to be made per design?

They will have to be designed to provide adequate movement capability with adequate contact area top keep the contact stresses acceptably low.
