SA 513 used as a loose type shell ring

Hi

I inherited a design that uses SA 513 material as loose type shell ring . I understand SA 106 B is a better choice . But my understanding it is not a pressure part as it is shell is welded as a slip on. The AI differs is there a section in which it explains that shell ring loose type is not a pressure part.

P = 250 psi

The shell is welded all the way thought the flange .

Slip on Flange is essentially a ring that is placed over the pipe end, with the flange face extending from the end of the pipe by enough distance to apply a weld bead on the inside diameter.

The OD of slip on flange is also welded on the back side of the flange.

ASME section VIII Div 1 - I am looking for a exemption from pressure part as the shell which is a pressure part slides into this flange and welded on both sides as shown in attachment in my previous thread

OK, a loose-type slip-on flange under Sec VIII, Div. 1. As there are rules for the design and fabrication including permitted materials of these components in Appendix 2, I would conclude they are indeed pressure parts.

Furthermore, the OD / ID is generally such that they cannot be made from pipe or tubing, but rather plate or forging.

It's unclear to me if you're talking about a flange or the pipe itself that is SA 513. Regardless, either one would be a pressure part in normal applications.

The slip on flange, whether loose or welded and you seem to indicate that it is welded to the pipe, is a pressure part.
