SA675 GR 70 Anchor bolts

Hi all,

I was wondering has anyone ever used SA675 Gr70 material to replace F1554 Gr.36 for anchor bolts? Would there be any risk except for the difference in yielding strength?

No. I never have. A couple concerning thoughts.

SA 675 steel material chemical behavior in an alkaline environment such as being embedded in concrete... which it sounds like it was never tested or intended for. Might be fine as most steel seems to be fine in concrete but just a thought.

Fatigue.... We know that F1554 anchor bolts perform well when exposed to fatigue loading as most anchor bolts, especially for high mast arms, light poles, traffic signals, or sign structures experience constant fatigue loads. Not sure how SA675 performs.

Ductility.... Again, F1554 anchor bolts meet certain ductility requirements. I'm not sure if SA 675 bolts are as ductile as F1554.

Corrosion. Many ASTM F1554 anchor bolts will be hot-dip galvanized. Can you galvanize SA 675 bolts?

Do SA 675 bolts even come in long enough lengths to produce any sort of significant capacity through development in the concrete?

Sure, the strength is higher but that's only one small piece of the puzzle.

I guess the bigger question is... why? What kind of a project are you working on that you would find yourself in a situation where you have to ask this question? What kind of a structure are these anchor bolts going to hold up? Something large? Or is this some small ground mounted mechanical equipment?

Thank you for your reply STrctPono, those are some valuable points. I will take those into consideration.
I am working on a project where our procurement guys are having issue getting F1554 material anchors. The supplier proposed to use SA675 material instead of F1554. And the structure I am designing a industrial structure about 35 meters high, so I think it is pretty large.
