Hey guys,

I'm wondering if anyone has any knowledge on safety factors/other design considerations on lifting connections by crane. It seems like it would be more than the vertical load. In this case it's a lag screw connection into CLT.

Thanks,

Our clt project they just put slings all the way around the plank like hollowcore and then after removing the straps they just slide it sideways before doing the side lap connection.

I did a CLT rigging design a couple years ago. I'll pull the calcs tomorrow and see what I did. Similar connection scheme.

@jayrod12 thank you for the suggestion, apparently that's not an option here due to some of our conditions bolting to steel. @phameng please do that would be helpful.

Hm, that's interesting. I had mine bolted to steel angles as well when they were adjacent to my stair and elevator masonry walls. But what do I know, I didn't actually watch them lift or place too many of the planks. I just don't remember this being any different from lifting hollowcore into place.

Granted, this was CLT floor/roof slabs only, not walls. I could see how walls could be a different scenario for lifting requirements since you can't easily remove the slings.

Revv - take a look at this: MTC Rigging Design Guide

MTC Solutions specializes in CLT and other engineered wood connectors and fasteners. They have a line that is specifically for rigging these panels, and they should be pretty easy to get. Maybe not as easy as driving over to home depot, but for a competent contractor that plans more than 3 days in advance, they shouldn't have an issue.
