How do you use this tool? I can't turn it on as it's always grayed out.

Scan Equal (Dimensions/Relations toolbar) scans in drawings for sketch lines of equal length or sketch arcs of equal radii. It does not examine model entities.

So it can't be used in sketch mode where I want to use it? That is where I would like to use Scan Equal

It would appear not. What's your ultimate goal? One would assume that, in sketch mode, your dims would be visible allowing you to see what is equal. Beyond that, you also have relationships that can be visual indicators as well.

I'm doing a tutorial from SolidWorks Essentials 2005: Parts and Assemblies Volume 1 page 265. It suggests using the Scan Equal tool in sketches.

Coming from Pro/E I miss the ability to sketch two lines, circles, etc... and have it automatically add an equal relation. I tried the Scan Equal without success as well before I realized it was for drawing mode only.

I know I can add the relations later in a sketch but it was much faster to have the sketch snap to an equal size of something you had drawn previously in the same sketch. Does SW not have this functionality or am I just missing it?

Scan equal no longer works but it's still there.
Pro/E has always been better for detecting Relations/Constraints during sketch because you can tab between all the detected constraints and use RMB Shift+RMB to disable/enable them. SolidWorks can only detect these 1 by 1.

You can use the Fully Define Sketch tool to add Relations and/or Dimensions for either selected items or all items in the sketch. When using this tool you can select Relations and select only the Equal relation and hit Check to find what scan equal used to.

Thanks Michael. It seems that for it to work the dimensions already have to be exactly the same, they can't just be "close enough" to each other to trigger the equal relation.

Maybe time for an ER.
