Where is it in the ASME drawing standards that it says you shouldn't have a 'section of a section'.

I thought it would be in Y14.3 but I don't see it. I'm sure it's come up on this forum before but a quick search didn't show it.

Or am I making this one up;-)

"The drawing must give only one interpritation." Yeah there are rules according to ANSI, but these are guidelines. If you have to create a section of a section to give the manufacturer a better idea, then I say go for it.

Taking a section from another section was not unusual at all in two fields that I've been in- reciprocating compressors and engines. This was common back in the paper days so it was probably done to save space and drawing time. Some sections were quite confusing if you weren't used to them, but they did convey a lot of information.

Now, with cad you can just add multiple sheets instead and easily have all the views you want, and also with something like Solidworks I don't think you can even take a section of a section.

Our main CAD software added the capability of making a section of a section at request of customers.

SW does allow you to do it, it was an SW drawing I was looking at when I posted this. Don't ask me how though, I've only used our other CAD system.

Even if you knew how, KENAT, I wouldn't share that. Sections of sections are a pain in the posterior. Generally the lazy person's out. With today's CAD it is relatively easy to take other cuts and views and do it right.
