What are the guidelines for selecting a particular type of chiller? What is the safe/optimum operating range in terms of tons of cooling for:
1. Chillers with scroll compressors (air cooled)
2. Chillers with screw compressors (air cooled)
3. Centrifugal chillers (water cooled)

Thank you.

I would focus on understanding your system demands, and then let a chiller manufacturer look at your operating flows and temperatures and determine which machine and compressor type pairs up with your application and demands.

You give way too little information on your post for anybody here to help you.

For the untrained eye, we might look like magicians, telepathic wizards or even miracle making gods.

But we are just human...[peace]

If you would like to have meaningful and useful responses, you need to provide meaningful information.

Climate, load, availability and so much other information required to determine which chiller works best.
Are you in Antarctica, or Sudan? is the load 1,000 tons, or 20 tons? Are you cooling all year, or only in cooling season?
